What is RAW? RAW is an image format that is similar to JPG, GIF, TIFF, etc Its uniqueness is that it is the only format that retains all the information from the camera s image sensor. In other words it s the raw camera data that is full and uncompressed. The majority of other point and shoot cameras output to JPG. These cameras take all the raw data, throw away what IT thinks is unnecessary, and then compresses the image. This is all done by a 30cent microchip.
