Great, but with some minor flaws

Bewertet am: Jun 22, 2008

Fazit:  Despite some flaws, this is still a game I recommend you get as soon as possible.
Overview:
Burnout Revenge is undeniably the best game in the burnout series. I myself became hooked with this game when it was a demo on Madden NFL 06. However, some flaws can make this game a little frustrating.

Graphics:
These graphics just blew me away. They are nothing that I've seen on the PS2 before. They almost seem worthy to be on the Xbox 360. Smooth lines and a nice sheen with very clean designs make the cars in the game feel as if the are really there. The shine on the cars actually follow the light instead of just staying on the same spot. For example; If the sun is behind you, then all the glare off the body is towards the rear of the car. It really adds to the reality. Not only that, but the designers have put painstaking detail into every track to give it such depth that it really feels as if you are racing in the mountains, or the suburbs, or where ever you are. The buildings aren't just rectangles with textures on them, but really have shape and depth. These are some of the best graphics I've ever seen on the PS2.

Audio:
There are basically two parts to this; Music and sound effects, effects first. The sound effects are very well done, especially when there are crashes. You can hear the metal twisting and the tires screeching with a perfect balance that feels as if you are witnessing a true crash. Some other minor things really bring out the realism in the game. You pass a traffic car and you can hear a little tire squeal of the driver of the car freaking out that another car just whipped by him at 170 - 200 miles per hour. If you pass very close to other objects, you can hear a whoosh of them passing by and it really brings the game to life. Music wise, isn't so good. Whoever chose the soundtrack didn't do very good of a job, as it usually is with most EA games. The music doesn't give you a sense of speed, and modern, sleek cars. Sure some tracks give you that feel, but most are quite low grade tracks.

Gameplay:
The gameplay in this game is very, very precise. And with this game, a split second difference could mean a smooth drift or crashing into a wall. The controls seem very simple and the concept of drifting is actually quite simple. Just a tap of square while turning and your drifting like a pro, all that remains is to know when to start the drift and when to end it. The AI racers, or 'Rivals' are very well done. They are aggressive and you truly have to battle them for first place, as opposed to just looking at them and the crash with some other games. There is also some strategy involved as there are numerous shortcuts with each track. With some disguised as shortcuts but are actually longer than the main track. The new revenge tactic is a welcome addition. If you are "Taken Out", then the car that caused you to crash will now have a revenge icon above the car. This turns all shunts, slams and the like in to revenge shunts, etc. This makes for much more competitive gameplay. I find myself thinking "Oh, you are gonna get it." after being taken down and the camera shows what rival has done it. However, there are some flaws that can ruin gameplay a little. You will experience numerous times where you crash into seemingly nothing. This may seem little, but when this happens, usually every car passes you flaming wreckage, and then you back in last place. Some unrealistic crashes happen also. You can go barreling through traffic, send cars into the oncoming lane with your car getting so much as a hairpin scratch. But if you run into a measly little fence, suddenly you see your car with the entire front half smashed into the back half with the fence not even bending a little. Also, if you barely touch either front corner of your car into some thing, the realistic thing that would happen is that you lose some control briefly and lose you headlight, right? According to EA, WRONG. You go flying through the air while flipping and land on your roof. Those are just a few eyebrow -raising events in this game.

Multiplayer:
This is actually the first time that I have to dedicate an entire section to non-online multiplayer, because there is so much to do. First of all, you can now play with every car that you have unlocked throughout singleplayer. But there are also many different modes. You do have your standard race. But you also have 'Road Rage' where the first on to have 10 takedowns wins. There is many different modes of 'crash' mode, where you try to strategically crash your car to cause the biggest chain reaction of normal cars crashing into things that you can. The is 'Crash Battle' where you and a friend compete to get the bigger crash, and the is 'Crash Party" where you and that friend see how big of a crash you can cause together. There are other ones, such as 'traffic attack' were you see who can slam into the most normal cars before time runs out.

Story:
There is really nothing in terms of a Storyline here. Basically you race, try to get gold, and unlock things like new tracks and cars. This can get very challenging and will leave you close to frustrated tears a few times.

Online:
This is probably the shortest section I've written because, well, the is no online play. Which really disappoints me because this would have been a great online play game.

Closing Comments:
Burnout Revenge is a very action packed game that you can come back to again and again no matter how good you are at this game and still have a great time. Just some minor flaws that kept it from perfection.
