Basic, but serves its function!

Fazit: If you are a first time user and/or don't need much, this is just fine: it serves its purpose!
Why I bought it, and my experience with it.
When we left Italy to come to the States in September, we received the Logitech QuickCam Express as a gift from very dear friends of ours, in the hope of being able to communicate somehow through the web, saving money on long distance phone calls.
Installation was very easy (plug n play, plus some software), and also starting to use it was easy.
When you click on the Logitech QuickCam icon you get a user friendly display with the following choices:
Left Side
MSN Messenger or
Yahoo! Messenger or
Windows Messenger, to start up a chat, video, or audio session (or all three together);
Video E-mail, where you have a choice between Quick Capture (for taking pictures or making videos) and Open my Logitech Pictures (for opening existing pictures or videos to be sent by e-mail)
Right Side
Quick Capture
My Logitech Pictures
Create a Web Cam, to display live images through an Internet web page
Logitech Control Panel, through which you can adjust the webcam s settings (color, brightness, saturation, etc)
In the center of the display, you have the description of the option you choose (just by sliding your mouse over it).
We started out by having fun with brief videos (we were also given a microphone, which this webcam does not have incorporated) to send to family and friends, which turned out to be quite good in terms of file size, specially for those who still have dial-up (that takes forever with large files). Quality isn t the greatest, but a webcam is not what I m going to be using, anyway, for high quality videos! What I also do sometimes, is make a video with my digital camera, and import it to the Logitech software to resize it for e-mails. There might be a simpler way to do that, but I ll leave that to professionals (or till someone teaches me otherwise)!
Then, we finally used the web cam for its real purpose: communicating over the Ocean with Italy. We signed up with MSN (no specific reason why we chose that instead of the others), and went for it and it worked!!! With just a couple of seconds of delay, we managed to have conversations with friends and family, and see one another at the same time.
This is a very basic webcam, plus color and definition aren t the best (this by comparing our image with those of whoever was on the other side), but for first time users who are mainly interested in video chatting, it s fine. Logitech is a good make, the webcam has a solid structure, and it serves its function just fine. Plus, because it s so basic, it doesn t even cost that much!
