General
The specialized design gives the lens the ideal properties for APS-Cdigital cameras. The lens image circle is designated to correspond to the size of the image sensors of the Canon digital SLR cameras. If used on "full frame" cameras, vignetting will occur on the picture surface.
Been using this lens for roughly 4 months and I just love it! It's my ideal "walk around" lens since it has such a wide range. Image quality is good enough for most applications, although image quality doesn't come close when compared to the image quality of the Canon "L" series lens. But for the price, I'm more than satisfied with the image quality.
OS (Optical Stabilizer) Feature
The optical stabilizer option allows you to get sharp pictures at shutter speeds roughly 3-4 stops lower than you could without using the OS feature. This helps a lot in low light conditions where you want to capture the natural lighting and just don't have a tripod with you. The OS feature is powered from the camera battery, thus, battery life on the camera will be reduced when shooting with OS activated. To conserve battery life, turn off OS when not needed. I mainly use the lens with the OS off, but the few times I did use it, I didn't notice too significant of a battery drain.
Lens Hood
Detachable bayonet type is provided with the lens. Helps prevent lens flare and ghosted images, although not good to use the lens hood with the camera built-in flash, shadows will be present. When not needed, the lens hood can be attached in reverse to the lens.
Filter
Use only one at a time. Using more than one may result in vigentting. I currently use a Hoya circular polarizer, very little vignetting is visible at 18mm. Would like to use a UV filter and circular polarizer, but that would increase vignetting 18mm.
Update: 5/7/2009
It's been a while since I purchased this lens and I have to admit that it has seldom been disconnected from my Rebel xTI. The 18mm range comes in very handy in "tight" situations as well as for landscape shots. There is some curvature in the images at the 18mm range, but it's very minimal (to me), definately worth it to get that wider shot that most cameras can't do. At the other extreme, 200mm comes in VERY handy when you want a close up of wildlife but can't get too close to your subject (like taking a picture of a flower up in a tree).
With an audio CD on the ground, standing above the CD (camera roughly 4'-6"above floor), at the;
18mm range: CD is roughly the size of the camera center "AF point" (AF point inscribed in CD)
200mm range: CD "fills" the viewfinder (CD inscribed in viewfinder)
Image quality is just fine for non-professional prints. The biggest print I did so far was 8x10 and was very pleased with the quality.
I do wish the lens was a bit faster, but the optical stabilizer does help in taking blur free pictures in those pesky lower lighting conditions, usually by 2 or 3 stops. I'm a macro fan, so a lower f-stop is preferable in macro shots to get that "blurred" background effect, but in all honesty, there were only a few times where I really wished I could go faster than f3.5.
All in all, I'm glad I got this lens. It's the only lens that has travelled with me internationally, and I'm sure it will be travelling with me more (domesticaly & internationaly). It's a great "walk around" lens, a bit heavy, but convenient, and when you can take that shot the way you want, it makes it all worth it.
I highly reccommend it, and it's probably cheaper now too!
